Message from Julie

At the beginning of another exciting new year, I hope that we will continue to be the Visiting Teacher that Heavenly Father wants and expects us to be.  It is not about the numbers or percentages that matter in this sacred work.  It is the friendship, love and vital service you provide that is so important.  “Watchcare” is what this work is all about as Sister Julie Beck stated in the following quote taken from the January 2011 visiting teaching message:

"Through visiting teaching, we provide watchcare by contacting each sister, sharing a gospel message, and seeking to know her and her family's needs.  Visiting teaching becomes the Lord’s work when our focus is on people rather than percentages,” explains Julie B. Beck, Relief Society general president.  “In reality, visiting teaching is never finished.  It is more a way of life than a task.  Faithfully serving as a visiting teacher is evidence of our discipleship.”

I pray that we will be the kind of Visiting Teacher that Heavenly Father can count on to be His eyes, hands and listening ears.  All of His children need to be watched over and cared for.  

Thank you for all you do for the sisters in our ward and neighborhood.  Continue to pray for inspiration on behalf of the sisters and the Lord will direct you to those whom you can serve.

Sister Spotlight - Lynette Padilla

I grew up in Colorado, the oldest of five children.  As a young girl, my biggest dream was to attend college and to earn a scholarship playing the thing I was most passionate about: fastpitch softball.  I earned my degree in Electrical Engineering and never paid a dime in tuition.  I squeezed in a mission between colleges and was blessed to serve in Austria, mostly in Salzburg.  I met Gil, my husband, in my last year of college in New Mexico.  We were married after I graduated and I moved to Salt Lake six years ago for a job that I have since quit.  However, other work related opportunities have kept us in Utah.  I helped start a company three years ago, and that is where I currently work about 30 hours a week.  We have two boys, Braddock and Cassius, who are three and two, which keeps me from suffering from boredom, LOL.  I coach some local girls privately and volunteer with teams in Taylorsville here and there.  Besides softball, I love to ski and play golf, as well as basketball and volleyball.  I like to meet challenges and achieve goals no matter how big or small.

Sister Spotlight - Anna Tupa'i

My name is Saloma Anna Stowers Tupa'i but I go by Anna.  I was born on the beautiful island of Matotua in Western Samoa.  When I was born my grandparents wanted to take care of me, more like keep me as their own.  My mother then left me behind and moved to New Zealand to get a better education.  My grandparents raised me until I was eight years old.  I then moved to the United States with my auntie and her family.  Her husband was coming here to attend Brigham Young University to study for his masters degree.  In 1987 my auntie and family were ready to move back to the island.  Traveling through California we met up with my Grandma's sister who lives in Long Beach.  To make a long story short I was left behind again with my Grandmother's sister.  I graduated from high school in 1989.

After twelve years of marriage I was blessed with five children.  Deanna is 23, Jared is 22, Elijah is 17 and Max is 15.  My son Angel would be 20 but he was called back to our Heavenly Father at birth.  We moved into the ward in October of 2006 and in February 2009 I was blessed once again with a beautiful little girl named Nancyeeanna.  She is three years old and keeps me going.  I have been greatly blessed throughout my life.  I am thankful for the knowledge and my testimony of the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ.  I am so grateful and thankful for the Morningside Ward family.  I love you all and thank you for everything.

Book Club

These are the theme's for the next few months for our Book club.
It is always on the 3rd Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m.
We do need someone to host the book reviews and some book suggestions. We also would love anyone to join us and bring a friend!!

Brooklyn Scout Clayton is here

Eleisha Clayton had her baby this morning at 2:30 a.m.  She's 6 lbs. 15 oz. and 21 inches long.  She's at IHC.  The baby's name will be Brooklyn Scout Clayton and they're calling her Scout.

You are hereby called to serve as a missionary of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. You are assigned to labor in the California Los Angeles Mission. In addition to your calling to share the gospel, you will be assigned to serve in the Los Angeles Temple Visitors' Center. It is anticipated that you will serve for a period of 18 months. Sister Spotlight - Rachel Martel

I grew up in Germany, Canada and Idaho and served a mission in Romania.  I graduated from BYU Idaho in recreation leadership from Gonzaga University.  I just moved here from St. George where I was working as an event coordinator at Dixie State College.  One of my favorite things to do in St. George was ushering at Tuachan for plays such as, "Les Miserables, Aladdin, Aida, The Sound of Music and Tarzan."  Les Mis was my favorite!  I also enjoyed being a volunteer captain for the Ironman.

I am currently living with my sister and brother-in-law, Eleisha and Steve Clayton while I look for a job.  My dream job is to coordinate humanitarian service trips for youth.

I love playing ultimate frisbee and being involved with Singular Humanitarian expereince (SHe).  My humanitarian trips have taken me to Nepal, Kenya, and Guatemala.  I love working with youth and enjoyed my calling as a young women's leader in my last ward.

Chloe Loveless

Eric and Teresa Loveless welcomed their new little girl, Chloe into the world on October 7th (Sunday morning).  She weighs 7 lbs 10 oz and is 20” long.  Welcome Chloe!

Ward Temple Night

The ward has set up a temple dinner night on Oct. 20^th at 6 pm.  The cost for the dinner is $8.75. You can pay with a donation slip, and under "other", write in – ward temple night.  We need a tentative number of persons planning on attending one week prior and a final count at least 2 days before.  This just leaves next Sunday to get those numbers.

The baptistery does not accept reservations weekdays after 3 pm and on Saturdays, so the youth would be on a first come first served basis, and an endowed leader needs to escort them from the baptistery to the dining room and back.

The temple will prepare gluten free meals and will need the number of persons and their name by the 18^th.

Help!

Sisters, we are in need of some sisters who would be willing and able to assist Margaret Burr with watching her mother (Charlotte) one day a week for a couple of hours, or for Margaret to call upon as needed. This would consist of sitting and reading to her, or chatting with her and you may be asked to move her from her chair to her wheelchair and to the restroom.  She can stand on her own for a few seconds and one would need to be able to pivot with her to the wheel chair, toilet and her regular chair.  Please email me (Julie) if you are willing and able to assist. Potluck Dinner

The General Women's Meeting broadcast will be held Saturday, September 29th at 6:00 p.m. and the Taylorsville Stake will meet at our stake center to view the broadcast together.  We do not have tickets to attend the Conference Center.

There will be an "old fashioned" potluck preceding the broadcast at 4:30 p.m.  Bring something to share with others and we will eat whatever we all bring!  You are welcome to bring friends and neighbors, sisters and daughters.

Sister Spotlight - Rashika

I'm Amol Rashika Raju, I go by Rashika. I was born in the beautiful friendly Island called Fiji. My Parents are convert to church. I was nourished in Gospel from my childhood. I served mission in Fiji Suva Mission. I did my Undergraduate in BYUH and my Masters in Uni of Utah and Stevens Henager College. Currently I'm doing my internship on Oracle Software Solutions in Finance. I come from a family of five. I'm the 2nd child in my family. I have an elder brother and a younger sister. My role model is my Mother. Her teachings, nourishment and examples inspires me and will continue to inspire me for life and eternity. I value family, gospel,career,education, knowledge and wisdom. I enjoy music, cooking,dancing,beauty tips, nature (gardening) and I love to attend temple. my mormon.org link is here.

Missionary Moment

Kris, Mason's mom, writes, "Mason has had the most amazing life changing experiences in Madison, Wisconsin! He truly is so happy and loves what he is doing. He has mentioned more than once that he loves serving God and loves being there and making a difference.

One experience that stands out: He met a member (John 35, 280 pounds and had children) that had been in a coma for 6 months and was working on quitting smoking and drinking. John had told Mason how his boss bullied him in various ways every day at work.

He did things like flipping him with a wet towel and making him bleed.  Mason said, “I was so angry I just wanted to kill that boss. But instead I decided to turn it over to the Lords hands. I prayed that night with all my might, mind and heart that John would be loved and respected at work and that, his boss would no longer be a burden to such a sweet man with such a big heart.  The next time we met with John he said his boss was really nice to him and he was really surprised, his boss even shook his hand which he had never done before! Prayers are answered and heavenly father does care about all of his children.”  Mason also added, “One of my greatest regrets are the times in school I bullied those around me. (Mom, I can see you as you read this, thinking to all the times you called me a bully haha)  Its really hit so hard there’s no excuse to ever bully someone. At that time in my life when I reverted to bullying someone or even tearing them down, (doesn't matter who it was) I was truly so miserable in my own skin and with who I was I had to take it out on others to make myself feel better. Never again.”

This is just one example of a personal life lesson Mase has learned.  I cried a lot in the beginning because I missed him but now my tears every Monday are tears of joy for a young man that has sacrificed so much, learned so much in such a short time, tears of joy for him choosing this path to serve God and know deep in his heart that what he is doing is making a difference in other people’s lives – I am beyond words of gratitude, blessings and just pure love for my son, family and friends that surround us and all the blessings that we have experienced.

One member, Cindy, called one night after Mason had left (they have been teaching members lessons) and let us know what a kind young man he is and the awesome lessons he was teaching. She had so many nice things to say about him. She said her son was serving a mission in Idaho and a member had called her so she wanted to pass it on.. I am so grateful she called me (although at first my heart did skip a beat because I wasn’t sure why she was calling and thought it was bad news)."
